  • 6s - Today we learned about supplementary, complimentary, opposite, interior and exterior angles.  See Google Classroom.

  • 7s - Today we did review for your test tomorrow on circles.  See Google Classroom.


Science

  • 6s - Today was a work period for your airshow project.  Friday is presentation day.  You are also expected to hand in your diagrams, written explanations, and planes on Friday.

  • 7s - Today you learned about the relationship between manufacturers and consumers.  You also watched a video about electronics.  See Google Classroom.

  • Both grades will have a test next Thursday.  We will do some review next week to prepare.  I’ll post study guides in Google Classroom.


Social Studies

After we read aloud from The Watson's Go to Birmingham - 1963, and discussed how setting was a factor in the main character's thoughts and actions.  Grade 6s are answering the same question this week for their book club novels.

Today we read a poem called "Autobiography in 5 Short Chapters" and discussed it.  Poem is here.

Then we created Writing Territories in our Writers Notebooks.  This is a list of potential topics, genres, and audiences to write about this year.

After students were asked to choose one item from their Writing Territories and begin writing.

Students also filled out a Writing Survey (due Wednesday).  Survey is here.

Finally students had time to read their independent novels.

 It was great to be back at school with the students today.  It's been a long time.

Today we discussed the new routines, expectations, and policies at school this year (safety, recess, lunch, etc...), and watched a few slideshows on safety and what to expect in the classroom this year.

We talked about cohorting, physical distancing, wearing masks, and hand hygiene.  

Students worked on a one-pager assignment to help me get to know them better.

After lunch we worked on some math problems and had a discussion about a poem called, "You Can't Write a Poem About McDonalds."

Reminder to all students to please bring a book to read tomorrow.

Hopefully you've been checking your TDSB email this week.  In it you will find a bunch of new information.

1) I've created a Google Site that we will be using in place of this blog.  A link was sent to you for that site.
2) An invitation was sent to you to join Mathletics, along with login information.  Please take a few minutes to log in and make sure you can access the site.
3) An invitation was also sent for you to join a Class 6A Google Calendar.  In the calendar is a link to attend a Google Meet session on Monday morning.  You will also find the link in our new Google Site.

Let's head into Monday with optimism and patience.  This is a new experience for everyone and we will figure it all out eventually.

Good afternoon.
Here's a quick reminder of where we left off in some of the subjects at school.

Math - We were learning about 3D Measurement (surface area and volume) and 3D Geometry.  Most of the practice questions were in the Nelson Math textbook, Chapter 11.

Social Studies - We were learning about Canada's trading partners.  Our next topic was going to be on Canadian NGOs and how Canada helps other countries around the world.

Science - We were finishing up a unit on Flight, and then we were going to learn about the solar system in our Space unit.

Last year I played this podcast for my students.  It's a serial story for young people, voice acted by young people.  The first season (10 episodes) is offered for free.  We really enjoyed it.  Maybe when you're finished you'll be inspired to make your own.  Heads up that the first minute or two of each episode is promotion for season 3, so you may want to skip ahead to the actual story.

Note: Please make sure you clean your locker before you leave for the break.  Throw out anything that will smell over time, and take home clothes to wash.

Social Studies
Today we began drawing a process chart for a product that is imported to Canada.  We looked at the example of an orange that is imported from Pakistan.  The orange is planted, grown, and harvested on a farm in Pakistan.  Then the orange is shipped from the farm to a packaging plant.  From there the orange is again shipped to a shipping port, and then either flown or shipped over seas to Canada.  After that, the orange is shipped to a food inspection centre, then to a distribution centre, then a supermarket, and finally to the home of the consumer.

Today we finished our experiment on the effect of Bernoulli's principle on different grades of paper.  We tested 4 types of paper, with and without flaps added, wrote observations, and then create a double bar graph that shows all of the outcomes.  Due Monday.

Hana's Suitcase art assignment due in 2 weeks.  Remember you are creating an art project based on one or more of the themes in the novel: hope, survival, liberation, freedom, danger, hatred, war, peace, safety, genocide, social justice.

The project can be in any form, but here are some ideas: reflective poem; short story; mind map; sculpture; painting; suitcase filled with artifacts; write a letter to Hana, the author Karen
Levine, or Fumiko; create new lyrics to an existing song or write your own original song; digital slide show.

Remember to include a brief description of your project when you hand it in.

1) We've begun reading Hana's Suitcase.  Today students answered some questions based on Chapters 1-4 in Google Classroom.

2) We'll write a test based on Spelling List #15 (last week's words) on Friday.

Math
Today students worked on finding the area of polygons by breaking the polygon into smaller shapes (rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms) and using formulas to find those areas.  Nelson textbook, Chapter 8, Lesson 6, #1-6 (due tomorrow).

Science
Students are building an electric car in small groups.  When finished, they will independently explain how their car works using their knowledge of simple electric circuits.

Social Studies
We spent time looking at various Canadian banknotes and analyzing the symbols used.  We discussed how the symbols on the banknotes represent Canadian values, contributions, and identity.  Students are now going to design their own banknote, choosing symbols, themes, and a prominent Canadian that they feel represent Canadian identity.
