Today we were learning about using taxonomy to classify living things.  The 7 taxonomy levels are...

Kingdom --> Phylum --> Class --> Order --> Family --> Genus --> Species

We used the rhyme Keep Ponds Clean or Frogs Get Sick to help us remember the order.  I posted information in Google Classroom --> Science on this topic.

Science
In Science we have been discussing the following terms...

  • vertebrates
  • invertebrates
  • endoskeleton
  • exoskeleton
  • warm-blooded
  • cold-blooded
In small groups, students discovered the characteristics of animals that are in each category and came up with a few examples for each.

Today, we used a venn diagram to compare and contrast animals from different categories (for example, fish and birds).

Students then added each term to their glossary, and updated the entry for species so it reads, "a set of animals or plants, in which the members have similar characteristics to each other and can breed with each other."

Science
Today we discussed a project where students will plan, design, and construct an electrical devices that performs a useful purpose.  Students will work in pairs.  I have reconsidered the project and have decided that students will build one of four possible devices (a flashlight, a desk fan, a game show buzzer, or a toy with a motor).  We will revise the expectations next time we meet for Science.

**Students were continuing to use pattern rules to extend patterns in order to solve problems.

**Students were conducting experiments with static electricity using balloons, salt and pepper, and tissue paper.  Then they watched several videos on the science of lightning and were asked to draw a labelled diagram to show their understanding.

Social Science

**Students are learning about reasons (Push and Pull Factors) people immigrated to Canada throughout history.

In English we are learning about the characteristics of a biography. We read a short biography of Nellie McClung and the students answered some questions on Google Classroom.
In Drama we played some drama games.
In Math the students used an online program called Knowledgehook to complete a diagnostic assessment of Patterning.
In Science we are starting to learn about Electricity.  We used Padlet to brainstorm ideas, developed a definition of electricity, and created questions we would like to answer during the unit.
In Social Studies students finished their Google My Map of their summer holidays, and began labeling a paper map of Canada's provinces and territories and their capitals.

Today we talked about our Term 1 goals, both academic and social, and the students chose one or two to pursue. 
We signed up for Newsela and read an article about the positives of texting.  Students completed a short quiz on the article and highlighted any news vocabulary.
In Math, we signed up for Knowledgehook and played a game show on patterning.  Then the students worked on some patterning questions as review of last year.
In Social Studies, we talked about what we will learn this year.  Then the students began work on an annotated map of their summer holidays using Google My Maps.

2) Finish writing task if you did not already do so.  Here is a link to the AW page: https://aw.tdsb.on.ca/sites/awsupport.  You'll need to enter your student number and password to get in.  Then just go to Google Apps --> Classroom to resume working.

3) Remember to complete the office forms and return to your teacher by Friday.

4) Bring Phys. Ed shoes/clothing for Friday's class.
